Finasteride for the purpose of treating male pattern baldness has been tested for safety during clinical trials in more than 3200 men. In three twelve-month-long, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter comparative studies, the overall safety of Propecia and placebo were similar. Discontinuation of therapy due to any clinically significant adverse events was made in 1.7% of 945 men who took this medication and 2.1% of 934 men who took a placebo.
In <1% of men taking this male-pattern baldness drug, the following side effects were noted:
- decreased libido in 1.8% (versus 1.3% in those who took a placebo);
- erectile dysfunction was observed – 1.3% (versus 0.7% in the placebo group).
In addition, a decrease in ejaculate volume was reported in 0.8% of men taking Propecia versus 0.4% in men receiving a placebo.
These side effects disappeared in those who withdraw this drug, as well as in many who continued to take it. In another separate study regarding the effect of this drug on the volume of ejaculate, no difference was found between those who took the drug and those who received a placebo.
The frequency of each of the above side effects decreased to <0.3% by the 5th year of treatment.

The interaction with alcohol
Alcohol intake is the main cause of hair loss. Alcohol is not excreted from the body for a long period of time, which means it contributes to a blockage of blood vessels. Consequently, the patient’s blood flow to the head worsens.
In order for the treatment of baldness to be successful and effective, it is recommended to completely abandon the use of alcoholic beverages. In the treatment of alopecia, it is advisable to adhere to proper nutrition. The diet includes more foods rich in calcium, iron, vitamins, and minerals. The menu should include green vegetables, fruits, seaweed, dairy and legumes, gelatin-containing foods, sea fish, poultry, and nuts. Refrain from eating fatty, spicy, salty, fried, or spicy foods. Refuse pastries.
